Cardinals remain perfect

Week 4 Results

After a month of football, we still have plenty of questions. Can the Cardinals remain unbeaten for an extended period of time? Will Derrick Henry threaten for a second consecutive 2000-yard season? Will the Jaguars ever win a game? I don’t have the answers to these questions, but I am able to recap Week 4’s action.

Thursday Night Football

Jacksonville Jaguars (0-3) at Cincinnati Bengals (2-1)

Pick: Cincinnati Bengals

Result: Cincinnati Bengals, 24-21

The 2021 Bengals have more wins than the Kansas City Chiefs after a month of play. Who thought we’d read the sentence? The Bengals were dominated in the first half but came back and took over in the second half. The Bengals, Browns, and Ravens are all tied up at 3-1 while the Jaguars are one of just two teams (the Lions being the other) without a victory.

1:00 PM Eastern Time Slot

Tennessee Titans (2-1) at New York Jets (0-3)

Pick: Tennessee Titans

Result: New York Jets, 27-24 (OT)

The Titans are still on track to win their division with the Colts being the only team that will threaten them in any way but losing to the Jets has to hurt. Zach Wilson made enough plays and the defense took advantage of the absence of A.J. Brown and Julio Jones.

Kansas City Chiefs (1-2) at Philadelphia Eagles (1-2)

Pick: Kansas City Chiefs

Result: Kansas City Chiefs, 42-30

The Patrick Mahomes to Tyreek Hill connection is alive and well. Philadelphia kept themselves in this one, and despite being 1-3, have shown that they might be better than I originally expected them to be entering this season.

Carolina Panthers (3-0) at Dallas Cowboys (2-1)

Pick: Dallas Cowboys

Result: Dallas Cowboys, 36-28

This game was nowhere near as close as the score indicates. Dallas’ Trevon Diggs has an interception in every game so far, including two in this one, and leads the league with five. How much longer will quarterbacks try to attack him?

New York Giants (0-3) at New Orleans Saints (2-1)

Pick: New Orleans Saints

Result: New York Giants, 27-21 (OT)

I might pick games including New Orleans with a coin flip from now on. This super inconsistent squad has a lot of pieces, but they don’t feel like a cohesive whole just yet.

Cleveland Browns (2-1) at Minnesota Vikings (1-2)

Pick: Minnesota Vikings

Result: Cleveland Browns, 14-7

I’m not “surprised” I picked this game wrong, but I am surprised that there weren’t a few more points scored. Minnesota desperately needs to pick up a few wins to remain competitive.

Detroit Lions (0-3) at Chicago Bears (1-2)

Pick: Detroit Lions

Result: Chicago Bears, 24-14

Guess it was just wishful thinking to pick the Lions. Between an errant snap that landed in a defensive lineman’s hands to the inability to stop the run, the Lions had no shot in this one. David Montgomery is expected to miss several weeks with the injury he sustained in this one which does hurt their rushing attack quite a bit.

Houston Texans (1-2) at Buffalo Bills (2-1)

Pick: Buffalo Bills

Result: Buffalo Bills, 40-0

Buffalo had no problems in this one. Things looked a little iffy to start, but then Buffalo got rolling and never looked back. Davis Mills will continue to struggle and grow as long as Tyrod Taylor misses time, but it feels like now or never to bring someone like a Cam Newton in.

Indianapolis Colts (0-3) at Miami Dolphins (1-2)

Pick: Indianapolis Colts

Result: Indianapolis Colts, 27-17

Without Tua the Miami offense seems to have no rhythm. Indianapolis took advantage of a weakened opponent to pick up their first win and will need to string together another couple to overtake the struggling Titans.

Washington Football Team (1-2) at Atlanta Falcons (1-2)

Pick: Washington Football Team

Result: Washington Football Team, 34-30

I picked the game right, but I definitely wasn’t expecting 64 points to be put up. Cordarrelle Patterson seems like a legit weapon in this Atlanta offense and Taylor Heinicke will keep the Football Team in playoff contention.

4:05 PM Eastern Time Slot

Seattle Seahawks (1-2) vs San Francisco 49ers (2-1)

Pick: Seattle Seahawks

Result: Seattle Seahawks, 28-21

Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t play any of the second half which gave the 49ers faithful their first extended look at rookie Trey Lance in a regular season matchup. Lance missed on a handful of throws but looks super explosive, an element this offense has lacked at the quarterback position since Colin Kaepernick. Seattle needs to sort out their defense to continue picking up wins.

Arizona Cardinals (3-0) at Los Angeles Rams (3-0)

Pick: Los Angeles Rams

Result: Arizona Cardinals, 37-20

I mentioned in my weekly preview that this game felt close to a coin flip, but the Cardinals outplayed the Rams from start to finish and are now the only remaining unbeaten team. The Rams should be fine moving forward, but their confidence has taken a small hit.

4:25 PM Eastern Time Slot

Pittsburgh Steelers (1-2) at Green Bay Packers (2-1)

Pick: Green Bay Packers

Result: Green Bay Packers, 27-17

Ben Roethlisberger is holding this offense back. The offensive line is far from great and Ben now lacks the playmaking ability to overcome those deficiencies. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers has looked absolutely fine since that poor display on opening weekend.

Baltimore Ravens (2-1) at Denver Broncos (3-0)

Pick: Baltimore Ravens

Result: Baltimore Ravens, 23-7

Baltimore won the game and tied the all-time NFL record for consecutive games with 100 yards rushing. Denver Head Coach Vic Fangio wasn’t happy about them getting the record on the final play of the game with three seconds remaining, but John Harbaugh hasn’t heard of a 16-point touchdown either.

Sunday Night Football

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1) at New England Patriots (1-2)

Pick: Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Result: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 19-17

Tom Brady won his return to Foxborough, but it was close. A missed field goal on the final play of regulation gave Tampa Bay the win in a game that saw Brady struggle a bit through the combination of inclement weather and game planning from the Patriot’s sideline.

Monday Night Football

Las Vegas Raiders (3-0) at Los Angeles Chargers (2-1)

Pick: Los Angeles Chargers

Result: Los Angeles Chargers, 28-14

Los Angeles looked like a complete football team capable of competing with anyone last night. Mike Williams had a bit of a mysterious disappearing act, but Justin Herbert played well and drove this team to a win.

Record this week: 11-5

Record this season: 43-21After a month of football, we still have plenty of questions. Can the Cardinals remain unbeaten for an extended period of time?
