How the race unfolded
Antonelli’s victory was remarkable given his starting position. He had been sent to the back of the grid after a power-unit penalty, but carved his way through the field with a combination of aggressivae overtaking and strong race pace.
The race was interrupted early by a red flag after Charles Leclerc crashed at the Parabolica. Leclerc was checked by medical staff and was reported to be fine, but Ferrari’s home race was effectively ruined.
After the restart, Russell controlled much of the race, but Antonelli continued his charge. Late in the race, the Mercedes teammates battled for the victory, with Antonelli eventually making the decisive pass on Russell.
Max Verstappen completed the podium for Red Bull, while McLaren’s Norris and Piastri finished fourth and fifth.
Historic moment
Antonelli became the first Italian to win the Italian Grand Prix since Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver also extended his championship lead to 66 points over Russell after 13 rounds.
Ferrari disappointment
Ferrari endured a difficult home weekend. Leclerc retired after his early crash, while Hamilton finished sixth, leaving the Scuderia without a podium at Monza.
