Another sold out show for the Scarborough Shooting Stars!

Oh, you thought, just the home opener was a movie? That was clearly not true! The Scarborough Shooting Stars welcomed the Countries most beautiful province to town last night. The Newfoundland Growlers. Although in last place with a record of 0-2 entering this game, the Growlers didn’t let the stars shine (too) easily.

The first half started off with Shaquille Keith (Growlers) owning the key and putting up a team high 36 points.  Shaquille is a seasoned vet in this game and you could tell by the leadership he showed. As head coach, Patrick Ewing Jr., stated that his guys need to do a better job of passing the ball. He noted there was one sequence where they passed it correctly but once isn’t enough, clearly.

There was an obvious shining star missing in last nights lineup, Xavier Rathan-Mayes.  Rathan-Mayes put up 28 pts and 5 rebounds in the home opener against the second place team, the Hamilton Honey Badgers. The fact that the kid from Scarborough (Rathan-Mayes) wasn’t available and Scarborough still won by 18 points, means that this team has depth.

Jalen Harris , who had a game high 38 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists, led not only in points but also hustle and heart. I asked Jalen after the game what they are going to bring from the win last night over to Edmonton and he respond with “a lot of the same things, by sharing the ball and playing strong defence. If we can do that consistently, we will have the better chance to win”.

Some notable players from the Shooting Stars were also Kyle Alexander(Canadian) and Jermaine Cole. Cole had back-to-back three balls and you’d think he gave away free tickets, the way the crowd responded.

Although the Growlers have added another loss to their 0-2 season , this young team is still hungry and will no doubt have a come up no one expected. The Stars' on the other hand- watch out Stingers! They are coming for your title and that starts Sunday!

Scarborough improves their record to 2-3 and  play the Edmonton Stingers in Edmonton Sunday June 12th at 3:00pm MT.
