Maple Leafs get blown out in New York
The New York Islanders had their way with the Toronto Maple Leafs with a decisive 7-2 win.
Not much of anything went Toronto’s way other than Sam Lafferty scoring his first goal as a Maple Leaf and Bobby McMann recording his first NHL point.
Following that the Islanders put up three straight in the second period. Zach Parise scored 28 seconds in to tie it followed by Hudson Fasching and Cal Clutterbuck.
Mitch Marner got one back for the Buds. With his 90th point of the season, Marner extends his point streak to seven games. He has five goals, three straight, for 13 points.
Again, it was the Islanders spoiling the party with four straight goals. Clutterbuck scored his second, Simon Holmstrom followed with his fifth of the year before Noah Dobson deposited one into the open cage with six minutes to go. Anders Lee capped it off at seven with his 27th of the season.
Overall, it was a very rough night for the Leafs. Bad turnovers and a lack of team defence were key in this one. A game that had a playoff feel with the Isles itching their way into the division as the top wild card team.
Ilya Sorokin stopped 25 of 27 with the Lafferty goal being double deflected in. He also made a save of the year worthy stop of Erik Gustafsson late in the first period.
Ilya Samsonov has been streaky at times this season and it is starting to show. Six goals on 28 shots is easily his worst performance of the season stat wise. It was not all on him though with the lack of team defence.
It back to the drawing board as the Leafs continue their four-game road trip. The next stop is Florida to take on the Panthers.
