The Toronto Maple Leafs were handed their first loss at Rogers Place in Edmonton 5-2.
It was a night that had fans excited with newcomers Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty making their debuts. While both looked solid, they each took a two-minute minor penalty.
McCabe’s penalty resulted in a Connor McDavid goal just under four minutes in. McDavid would score another in this one giving him his fifth consecutive multiple goal game. He joins the likes of Mario Lemieux (1988), Alexander Mogilny (1993), Joe Malone (1921) and Punch Broadbent (1922) as the only players to do so in five or more games.
David Kampf would score one to tie the game off Mitch Marner’s 55th assist but after this it was all Oilers. McDavid and former Leaf Zach Hyman scored to end the period at 3-1. Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin scored two in the second to give the Oilers a 5-1 lead heading into the third.
Marner would score early in the third on the powerplay, but this was all the Leafs could muster in a very one-sided affair.
It should also be noted that defenceman Timothy Liljegren left this one after a fall in the corner. It is believed he entered concussion protocols, but his replacement is on his way to Calgary in Luke Schenn. Schenn was traded to the Buds late Tuesday afternoon and was not able to make the game tonight. Schenn adds a physical edge the backend has been needing leading the NHL in hits since it started being tracked. The Leafs now have the all-time shot block leader (Mark Giordano) and the all-time hits leader (Schenn).
Ilya Samsonov had one of his rougher outings of the season allowing all five goals on 27 shots.
Toronto continues their road trip tomorrow when they take on the Flames.
