TAMPA BAY–It was just two days ago that the city of Colorado was preeminently planning its parade route. Closing out a 7-0 game two victory up 2-0 in the series headed back to Tampa, they seemed to control the pace.
But the Bolts made it very clear they’re not ready to turn over just yet. The defending back-to-back champs saw six different players score six goals in a 6-2 effort to cut the series lead to just one. Darcy Kuemper boasted a dismal .773 save percentage on the night, stopping 17 of the 22 shots he faced, before being pulled in favour of Pavel Francouz with the backup allowing one from Corey Perry just minutes into his tenure.
Despite the Avs outshooting Tamp 39-32 in the contest, Tampa returned to their gritty, physical style of play that we’re used to seeing. The Bolts collected 40 hits to Colorado’s 27 whilst blocking 27 total shots on the night with Colorado blocking just 12.
Colorado once again got themselves on the board first with captain Gabriel Landeskog grabbing his 10th of the playoffs less than 10 minutes into the opening frame. But unlike games prior, it was not followed by another Avs goal. Anthony Cirelli answered just minutes later, before Ondrej Palat grabbed his 10th of the postseason as well less than two minutes after Cirelli. It was the first time Tampa has led so far in this series.
Nick Paul scored just over a minute into the second, with Landeskog grabbing his second of the night for an answer, before Tampa scored three in seven minutes to pull away and seal the deal on this one.
Andrei Vasilevskiy looked like the playoff version of himself we were used to seeing in game three as the Russian stopped 37 of the 29 shots he faced for a save percentage of .949.
The Cup Final will stay down in the sunshine state as game four goes Wednesday, down in Tampa.
