UFC 288 – Aljamain Sterling Edges Out Henry Cejudo, What’s Next?

Aljamain Sterling made history this past Saturday night as he defeated Henry Cejudo via split decision to successfully retain his Bantamweight championship. It was a significant win as he set a UFC record for most Bantamweight title defenses.

Sterling managed to take down the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, which was impressive and showed that he was capable of holding his own in the wrestling exchanges. Cejudo was able to secure takedowns but was unable to cause much damage with ground strikes. The judges scored the bout 47-48, 48-47, and 48-47 for “Funk Master”, which now puts him in the discussion for greatest bantamweight of all time.

“Triple C” looked great in the octagon and went the distance with the reigning Bantamweight champion. It was an impressive performance, especially considering he hasn’t fought in three years. During his post-fight interview, the former two-division UFC champion mentioned that he will speak with both his family and team and make a decision on whether he wants to continue fighting but also noted that UFC 288 could be the last time he competes inside the octagon.

It will be interesting to see what Cejudo decides to do next as there are still exciting matchups for him should he decide to continue fighting.

Sterling, on the other hand, didn’t have to wait very long to find out who his next challenger will be as Sean O’Malley was brought into the octagon for a faceoff. “Funk Master” and “Sugar” exchanged words before they were separated by security. It appears as though the promotion is targeting UFC 292 in Boston as the location for the Bantamweight championship bout between Sterling and O’Malley.
