Cleveland Leads Toronto 1-0

Game 1 didn’t go the way Raptors fans wanted, and there’s no point pretending otherwise. Still, perspective matters. This team wasn’t even supposed to be here a few months ago, and now they’re opening a playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers after sweeping them 3-0 in the regular season. That’s why this one stings a little more.

A different intensity

Right from the opening tip, you could feel the shift. Playoff basketball hits different. The Toronto Raptors came in confident, but Cleveland matched that energy and then raised it.

Donovan Mitchell came out aggressive and set the tone early, looking every bit like a playoff closer. He was one of the top scorers on the floor and dictated the pace whenever the Cavs needed a bucket. Alongside him, Darius Garland controlled the tempo, hitting timely shots and making life difficult for Toronto’s perimeter defense.

Raptors fight, but shots don’t fall

Toronto didn’t fold. That’s been the identity of this group all season.

Scottie Barnes led the charge and was one of the top scorers for the Raptors, attacking the rim, pushing in transition, and trying to will the team back into it. You could see the urgency in his game, especially in stretches where the offense stalled.

RJ Barrett also had his moments, getting downhill and putting pressure on Cleveland’s defense. When he’s attacking like that, the Raptors feel dangerous.

The issue was consistency. Open looks didn’t always drop, and against a structured playoff defense, those missed opportunities add up quickly.

The difference maker

Cleveland’s depth and execution showed up at the right time.

Key contributions around Donovan Mitchell made it tough for Toronto to lock in defensively. Second-chance opportunities, timely threes, and just a little more composure down the stretch ended up being the difference.

The Raptors had runs. They had chances. They just couldn’t fully flip the momentum.

Perspective matters

Yes, they lost Game 1. Yes, it’s frustrating after winning the regular season series 3-0. At the same time, this is playoff basketball. Adjustments are coming. Rotations tighten. Young players learn fast or get exposed. This Raptors team has already exceeded expectations just by getting here. Now it’s about responding. Game 2 is where you find out what this group is really made of.

👏 Let’s Go Raptors 👏
