The Buffalo Bills opened the 2026 preseason in style, defeating the Carolina Panthers 29–14 in the first football game at the new Highmark Stadium.
Josh Allen makes an impact
Quarterback Josh Allen looked sharp in his brief appearance, completing 6 of 8 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown pass went to Keon Coleman, who caught all four of his targets and emerged as one of Buffalo’s biggest offensive standouts.
Allen’s efficient performance was particularly encouraging as new head coach Joe Brady begins his first season in charge.
Running game takes over
Buffalo’s ground attack finished with 151 rushing yards. Ian Wheeler rushed for 41 yards and a touchdown, while Frank Gore Jr. added 38 yards and another score.
The Bills steadily pulled away in the second half, scoring 13 fourth-quarter points to turn a competitive game into a comfortable victory.
Defense shows promise
The Bills held Carolina to 201 total yards and forced a turnover. The defense also generated pressure throughout the game, with Michael Danna among the players making an impact.
There were still some concerns, particularly with offensive-line depth and penalties, giving the coaching staff plenty to evaluate before roster cuts.
A memorable stadium debut
The victory provided the perfect on-field introduction to the Bills’ new Highmark Stadium. The $2-billion-plus facility hosted its first preseason game as Buffalo begins a new era both on the field and at home.
What’s next
Buffalo travels to Cleveland for its second preseason game on Saturday, August 22, before hosting Pittsburgh on August 27. The regular season opens September 13 at Houston.
Bottom line: A very encouraging start for the Bills. Allen and Coleman immediately showed chemistry, the running backs produced, and the defense created pressure. It’s only preseason, but 29–14 is an excellent way for the Joe Brady era and the new Highmark Stadium to begin.
