Berrios, Blue Jays get blown out in 12-1 loss to the Diamondbacks

The Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks played in their second of three games on Saturday night. Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, nothing went their way as they dropped the series to the Diamondbacks.

Jose Berrios (8-6, 3.76) got the start for the Blue Jays, opposing him for the Diamondbacks was rookie Yilber Diaz (0-0, 1.50). Berrios had a rough night on the bump, he threw four innings, giving up five runs over seven hits, walking four and striking out none, taking his seventh loss of the year. Diaz on the other hand, threw six innings, allowing just one runs over four hits, walking two and punching out two as he earned his first career win in the big leagues.

The Diamondbacks got the scoring started right away, when Joc Pederson got them on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the 1st.

The Blue Jays tied it at one in the top of the 2nd inning, scoring what would be their only run on an Alejandro Kirk sacrifice fly.

Arizona would take the lead right back in the bottom half of the 3rd. Jose Herrera’s RBI single made it 2-1, then a sacrifice fly from Corbin Carroll would extend the Snakes’ lead to 3-1.

The Diamondbacks would add more runs in the bottom of the 4th, scoring two on a single from Ketel Marte to make it 5-1.

The Snakes would continue to tack on runs, scoring three in the bottom of the 7th and four in the bottom of the 8th. Corbin Carroll would blast a three run shot, giving the Diamondbacks an 8-1 lead. Arizona would strike twice again via the long ball. A pair of two run homers from Eugenio Suarez and Carroll would extend the Diamondbacks’ lead to 12-1.

The main story of the night was Arizona’s offensive explosion, scoring 12 runs over 15 hits. Corbin Carroll lead the offence for the Snakes, going 2 for 4 on the night, with two homers and a walk while driving in six.

The Blue Jays will look to try and win the last of their three games against the Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon. They will send Yusei Kikuchi (4-8, 4.00) to the mound to face Zac Gallen (6-5, 3.33) as the Blue Jays will try to go into the All Star break on a positive note.
