Raptors Fall To Pistons In Tough Loss As Playoff Race Tightens
The Toronto Raptors ran into a strong Detroit team Tuesday night and suffered a 127 to 116 loss on March 31, 2026 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
This one was frustrating for Raptors fans because Toronto stayed within striking distance for most of the night yet could never fully close the gap against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference.
Detroit controlled the pace early and used their strength inside to build momentum. Toronto made a few pushes throughout the game, though the Pistons always seemed to respond with another scoring run.
The Pistons were led by a dominant performance from Jalen Duren, who finished with 31 points and 9 rebounds while attacking the paint all night.
Daniss Jenkins added 21 points for Detroit while Duncan Robinson contributed 19 points and knocked down several important outside shots that helped keep Toronto from making a serious comeback attempt.
Detroit has been playing extremely well lately and this win also helped them clinch the Central Division title.
Toronto had some bright spots offensively even in the loss:
- RJ Barrett led the Raptors with 23 points and kept attacking the basket throughout the game.
- Scottie Barnes continued to do a little bit of everything with 19 points while also contributing rebounds and assists as he tried to keep Toronto competitive.
- Inside the paint Jakob Poeltl battled hard against Detroit’s frontcourt and added 16 points while continuing to provide strong rebounding and interior defense.
- Toronto’s offense was not the main issue. The Raptors shot reasonably well and managed to score 116 points.
- Defense and rebounding were the bigger challenges.
Detroit consistently found second chance opportunities and controlled the tempo inside with their size and physical play.
Where The Raptors Stand In The East
With the loss the Raptors sit around the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff picture with a record around the low forty win range as the season winds down.
Detroit currently sits near the very top of the conference with more than fifty wins which shows just how tough this matchup really was.
Catching first place in the East at this stage is extremely unlikely for Toronto as the Raptors would need a major winning streak while the top teams above them suddenly start losing multiple games down the stretch.
The more realistic goal is securing a solid playoff position and avoiding the Play In Tournament.
Every game from here on out becomes extremely important!
Scottie Barnes Continues To Lead The Way
One of the biggest positives this season continues to be Scottie Barnes.
Barnes has developed into the leader and engine of this team. He continues to impact the game in multiple ways with scoring, playmaking, rebounding, and defense.
Many fans and analysts believe the Raptors look their best when the offense flows through Barnes more consistently.
Lineup Questions Still Being Figured Out
The Raptors are still working through lineup combinations as the playoffs approach.
The roster has a lot of versatile players who can play different positions which creates exciting possibilities for the future. Finding the best balance on the floor remains an ongoing process.
Games where the offense moves quickly and multiple players are involved tend to be when Toronto looks most dangerous.
Injury Concerns Are Something To Watch
Another storyline as the playoffs approach involves injuries.
Coach Darko Rajakovic has acknowledged that the team is managing some health concerns as the season winds down. Staying healthy will be critical if Toronto wants to make a real push once the postseason begins.
Possible Future Backcourt Moves
There has also been growing speculation about future roster moves.
Some reports have suggested the Raptors could look at adding a guard currently playing with the Golden State Warriors during a future free agency period. Strengthening the backcourt with another scorer and playmaker could be an important step for the next phase of this roster.
Final Thoughts
This loss hurts because the Raptors were coming off a few encouraging performances and had an opportunity to keep building momentum.
Detroit is one of the strongest teams in the conference and they showed exactly why.
Toronto still has time to build rhythm before the playoffs arrive. Consistency, health, and strong performances from players like Scottie Barnes, RJ Barrett, and Jakob Poeltl will be key during the final stretch of the season.
Raptors fans are hoping the team can find their best form at exactly the right time.
The playoffs are getting close and the opportunity is still there.
