Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in his 500th career run as he and another solid performance from Jose Berrios led the Toronto Blue Jays to a big 7-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals
Berrios (15-9, 3.52) toed the rubber for the Blue Jays while Kyle Gibson (8-6, 4.20) did so for the Cardinals. Berrios tossed 7 innings, allowing just one run on two hits, walking two and punching out four to earn his 16th victory of the year. Gibson threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits, walking three and striking out one to take his seventh loss of the year.
The Cardinals got on the board first in the top of the 3rd, taking a 1-0 lead thanks to a solo homer from Jordan Walker.
The Blue Jays got that run right back with a solo homer from Davis Schneider, tying the game at one.
The Jays took the lead in the bottom of the 6th when Nathan Lukes scored on a throwing error from Masyn Winn. An RBI groundout from Alejandro Kirk later in the inning would give the Blue Jays a third run. RBI singles from Ernie Clement and Schneider would extend the Toronto lead to 5-1.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached a career milestone, driving in his 500th career run with an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th. Guerrero Jr., who is 25 years old, became the youngest player in Toronto Blue Jays history to record 500 RBI, reaching the milestone in 806 career games.
The scoring continued in the inning when Kirk drove in another run with an RBI single, extending the Blue Jays’ lead to 7-1.
An RBI ground out from Jose Fermin gave the Cardinals a second run in the top of the 9th before the Blue Jays closed it out to take the series with a 7-2 victory.
Yariel Rodriguez (1-6, 4.42) will take the ball for the Blue Jays with Miles Mikolas (8-11, 5.55) will do so for the Cardinals as the Jays will look to take the series with a sweep on Sunday afternoon.
