#ICYMI: What is The Toronto Sports Curse?
The term usually refers to the decades of frustration Toronto fans have endured, where the city’s biggest teams often fall short in the playoffs despite having strong talent or THE BEST fan support. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Maple Leafs
👎 The heart of the curse conversation (and a very touchy one for lifelong Leafs fans)
👎 No Stanley Cup since 1967 (the longest active drought in the NHL).
👎 Multiple early playoff exits in the salary-cap era, despite superstar talent like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.
Blue Jays
👍 Won back-to-back World Series in 1992 and 1993.
👎 Then went 21 straight years without a playoff appearance (1994–2014).
👎 In recent years, even when making it to October, they’ve suffered heartbreaking sweeps or collapses BUT NOT THIS YEAR 🤞🤞🤞
Raptors
👎 Before 2019, they were part of the curse conversation: lots of playoff disappointment, usually at the hands of LeBron James.
👍 But the 2019 NBA Championship run ended that narrative for basketball in Toronto and since then? Well you know where we’re at BUT THEY HAVE TO BE BETTER THIS YEAR… Right?
Toronto FC
👍 In 2017, TFC won the MLS Cup, another sign the curse may not be as strong outside hockey/baseball.
The phrase “There’s always next year” is a common expression among Toronto fans, and we often joke that the Raptors and TFC “broke” the curse, but for the city’s oldest and most-followed teams, the weight of history still hangs heavy.
