The first bump in the road of the 2026 season finally arrived for the Toronto Blue Jays on March 31, 2026 at Rogers Centre, and it was a rough one. After opening the season with three straight wins and sweeping the Athletics, the Blue Jays ran into a Colorado Rockies team that exploded offensively and handed Toronto a 14 to 5 loss in front of the home crowd.
Every baseball season has one of those nights where everything seems to go sideways. Last night felt like one of those games.
The Blue Jays actually hung around early. The game was still manageable through the first few innings and it looked like Toronto might be able to grind out another comeback. Then the sixth inning happened and the entire night changed.
Colorado erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning, batting around and turning a close game into a runaway in a matter of minutes. That inning included a huge two run home run from Troy Johnston along with a string of hits from multiple Rockies hitters.
Once that rally got rolling the momentum completely flipped.
The Rockies finished the night with 17 hits and kept adding on runs late in the game. Toronto tried to push back late with a few home runs of their own, though the gap had already grown too big to overcome.
One of the most unfortunate moments of the night happened early when Cody Ponce made his first Major League start since 2021. His return unfortunately ended in the third inning after a knee injury while fielding a ground ball forced him out of the game.
That moment seemed to take some energy out of the Jays dugout as the bullpen had to absorb a lot of innings after his exit.
There were still a few bright spots offensively for Toronto:
- George Springer hit a home run and drove in a run.
- Davis Schneider connected for a home run and brought in two runs.
- Andrés Giménez added a home run of his own.
- Kazuma Okamoto also went deep as the Jays tried to chip away late.
Colorado’s offense was relentless throughout the night:
- Ezequiel Tovar had a big game with three hits and three RBIs.
- T.J. Rumfield collected three hits and two RBIs.
- Troy Johnston delivered the key two run home run that helped spark the big inning.
- Braxton Fulford also homered and added another run scoring hit.
When the dust settled the Rockies had their first win of the season while Toronto suffered its first loss after starting the year undefeated.
A lot of fans noticed something interesting around the league last night as well. Several teams that had opened the season undefeated finally lost on the same day. Baseball has a funny way of evening things out early in the year.
Season outlook still looks strong for Toronto despite the loss.
The Blue Jays still opened the year 3 and 1 and already showed what this team can do during the sweep of Oakland. The lineup has power throughout with players like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, George Springer, and emerging contributors like Kazuma Okamoto and Andrés Giménez. The pitching staff also looked strong in the first series with impressive outings from Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, and Eric Lauer.
One rough night does not change the bigger picture. Over a long 162 game season every contender takes a few punches along the way. The key is how a team responds the next day.
After watching this group come within one win of a championship last year, it is hard not to trust the resilience in that clubhouse.
The Blue Jays are still playing confident baseball early in the season and Rogers Centre already feels like a tough place for opponents to play again.
One loss after a hot start is simply part of the journey.
The goal is still the same as it was all winter.
Get back to October and finish what this team started last year.
👏 Go Jays Go 👏
