The Toronto Blue Jays needed to play 10 to take the third game and ultimately the series against the AL West leading Seattle Mariners.
The Blue Jays sent Jose Berrios (8-6, 3.76) to face George Kirby (7-6, 3.22) of the Mariners for their rubber match on Sunday afternoon. Berrios threw 6 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, along with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Kirby also threw 6 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out eight. Both pitchers left with no decisions.
The Mariners got on the board first, when the recently signed Victor Robles took Berrios deep for a solo shot in the bottom of the 3rd, giving Seattle a 1-0 lead.
The Jays got a run back in the next inning, thanks to an Alejandro Kirk sacrifice fly.
The Mariners then took the lead in the bottom of the 5th, after Mitch Garver unloaded with a three run blast to give his squad a 4-1 lead.
However, the Blue Jays would break through in the top of the 7th. Alejandro Kirk would lead off the inning with a single, followed by another single from rookie Leo Jimenez, the second of his first two hits in the big leagues. George Springer then stepped up to the plate with two on and one out, he too unloaded a three run homer of his own, tying the game at four.
Both teams could not score in the 9th, so the game headed to extra innings. But fortunately for the Blue Jays, they only needed one more inning to secure the victory. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. starting off the 10th inning on second, Daulton Varsho came up clutch. Varsho lined a single into right field, scoring Guerrero Jr. and giving the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead.
The Mariners threatened with two on and two out in the bottom half of the 10th, but Genesis Cabrera was able to shut down the Seattle lineup to secure the victory and his second save of the year.
With that, the Blue Jays won their first series since June 14-16 when they took two out of three against the Cleveland Guardians.
The Blue Jays will start another three game series for their nine game road trip as they visit the Bay to take on the San Francisco Giants in inter-league play. The Jays will send Yusei Kikuchi (4-8, 4.12) to face former Blue Jay Jordan Hicks (4-5, 3.47) as they get ready to play the Giants on Tuesday night.
