George Chuvalo — 1937–2026
Chuvalo was one of the toughest heavyweight boxers Canada ever produced. A Toronto native, he compiled a 73–18–2 professional record with 63/64 knockout wins, depending on the historical record source. Most famously, he was never knocked down in 93 professional fights.

His first fight with Ali, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1966, became legendary. Chuvalo absorbed 15 rounds against the heavyweight champion and remained on his feet throughout.
Chuvalo never captured a world heavyweight championship, but his toughness, durability and willingness to fight the best made him an iconic figure in Canadian boxing. He was also a five-time Canadian heavyweight champion and a member of the Order of Canada.
George Chuvalo’s legacy is that of a true Canadian warrior—one of boxing’s great iron chins and one of Toronto’s most recognizable sports figures.
