The Euros have finally kicked off with the first match being played in the host nation Germany, who faced Scotland. It was a thrilling encounter, with Germany winning 5-1.
It was the first time in Germany’s history that they scored 5 goals in a European Cup match. The first goal came from Writz, the Bundesliga Player of the Season. The second goal was scored by Musiala after a strong German buildup led to a cool finish from the youngster. Just before the end of the first half, Germany were awarded a penalty after a harsh tackle on Gundagon, with Havertz stepping up to make it 3-0. The reckless tackle not only gifted Germany a penalty but also saw Scotland reduced to 10 players due to a red card.
Germany made substitutions in the second half, one of which allowed Fullkrug, the Dortmund striker, to blast a volley past the keeper. Scotland did manage to get on the scoreboard, but unfortunately, it was due to a mistake by Germany’s own player, Rudiger, who scored an own goal. The excitement didn’t end there, as Emre Can scored a clinical shot in the 93rd minute of stoppage time to seal a big win for the hosts.
It will be interesting to see what the coming week holds, with all the other matches getting underway and the road to crowning the new Champions of European football.
