Five different Maple Leafs scored, and Joseph Woll stopped all 29 shots he faced as the Toronto battered the struggling Canucks, defeating Vancouver 5-0 Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena.
Toronto entered the game winners of their last three, Vancouver losers of their last five; both those streaks continued.
Matias Maccelli opened the scoring for Toronto, netting his 7th of the season on the power play at 8:43 of the first. Maccelli set up in front of Vancouver goalie Thatcher Demko and tapped a William Nylander shot by him to make it 1-0.
Maxi Domi doubled the lead at the 16:31 mark of the period. Troy Stecher caused a turnover, then sprang the winger on a partial break. Domi snapped a wrister by Demko’s blocker side for the 2-0 advantage.
The Leafs were not finished. William Nylander scored with 20 seconds left in the period, one of his three points on the night. Steven Lorentz hit “Willy Styles” with a beautiful cross-ice pass, and the Team Sweden Olympian drove to the net and beat Demko with a backhander for a 3-0 lead.
Demko’s night ended after the first. Kevin Lankinen replaced him, but did not fare much better. John Tavares scored his 16th of the season, beating the Vancouver substitute, top shelf, 13:07 into the second, and Nicholas Robertson added a power-play goal with 14 seconds left in the game to make the final 5-0.
Next up, Toronto travels to Colorado to take on the Avalanche Tuesday night.
