Raptors Fall To Kings On April Fools Night In Frustrating Home Loss

Raptors fans were hoping April 1 would bring some laughs and maybe another strong performance at home. Instead, the Toronto Raptors dropped a frustrating 123 to 115 loss to the Sacramento Kings on April 1, 2026 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

For a moment it almost felt like an April Fools joke. The Raptors entered the game as heavy favorites against a struggling Sacramento team near the bottom of the Western Conference standings. The Kings had other plans.

Sacramento came out with energy and played with confidence from the opening quarter. Toronto kept fighting to stay close though the Kings controlled key moments throughout the game.

The biggest storyline of the night was seeing two familiar faces lead Sacramento.

Former Raptors DeMar DeRozan and Precious Achiuwa both delivered huge performances against their old team.

DeMar DeRozan scored 28 points including several clutch baskets late in the fourth quarter. DeRozan also made history during the game by moving into 17th place on the NBA all time scoring list.

Precious Achiuwa was just as impactful. Achiuwa finished with 28 points and an incredible 19 rebounds while dominating the glass and giving Sacramento extra possessions throughout the night.

Sacramento also received strong support from the rest of their lineup.

Malik Monk added 18 points while Devin Carter chipped in 13 points and Daeqwon Plowden contributed 11 points as the Kings snapped a losing streak and picked up a surprising road win.

Toronto had some bright spots even in the loss.

RJ Barrett led the Raptors with 20 points and remained aggressive attacking the basket.

Rookie Collin Murray Boyles also finished with 20 points and showed flashes of why the organization is excited about his development moving forward.

Jakob Poeltl added 18 points in the paint while continuing to battle inside.

Scottie Barnes recorded a double double with 14 points and 10 assists while trying to keep the offense moving.

Sandro Mamukelashvili provided energy off the bench with 17 points and Jamal Shead chipped in 16 points to help keep Toronto within striking distance.

Toronto made a push late in the fourth quarter and even cut the deficit down to two points with just over three minutes remaining. Sacramento responded with big plays from DeRozan and Achiuwa to close the game and seal the upset victory.

Where The Raptors Stand In The East

The loss drops Toronto to 42 wins and 34 losses as the regular season enters its final stretch.

The Raptors are still firmly in the Eastern Conference playoff picture though the race for positioning is tight.

First place in the East is likely out of reach at this stage. Teams at the top of the conference have built a strong cushion with only a handful of games remaining.

Toronto would need a long winning streak combined with multiple losses from the teams above them to realistically climb to the top.

The more realistic goal is finishing strong and locking in a solid playoff seed while avoiding the Play In tournament.

Key Thoughts As Playoffs Get Closer

Even after this disappointing loss there are still several positive storylines surrounding the Raptors.

Scottie Barnes continues to prove he is the centerpiece of this franchise. His ability to score, pass, defend, and lead the offense has been one of the biggest reasons Toronto remains competitive.

The team is still working through lineup combinations as well. The roster has a lot of versatile players who can shift positions which creates exciting potential when the right mix is on the floor.

Health will also be extremely important during the final stretch of the season. Coach Darko Rajakovic has acknowledged that the team is managing injuries as the playoffs approach. Keeping the core players healthy could make a major difference once the postseason begins.

There has also been speculation that the Raptors could eventually pursue another guard in free agency to strengthen the backcourt and add additional shooting around Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett.

Final Thoughts

This loss hurts because it was a game Toronto probably expected to win at home.

Sacramento played with confidence and their former Raptors stars made sure the fans in Toronto remembered them.

The good news is the Raptors still control their playoff destiny. A strong finish over the final games of the season could build the momentum this team needs before the postseason begins.

Raptors fans are still hoping this group can find their best version of themselves at exactly the right time.

👏 Let’s Go Raptors 👏
