The Leafs could not survive the Senators’ offensive onslaught Saturday night. Ottawa fired 43 shots at Toronto goaltender Joseph Woll on their way to a 5-0 win.
The Maple Leafs were on the second leg of a back-to-back, and the hangover effect from their overtime loss against the Hurricanes was on full display. Toronto was outshot, out-skated and outplayed, a combination that yields very few wins.
Ottawa opened the scoring on a power play. Tim Stutlze walked in and ripped a wrist shot by Woll at 14:58 of the first period.
Claude Giroux doubled the Senators’ lead 9:09 into the second. Tyler Kleven flipped a shot toward the net from just inside the blue line. Giroux got to the rebound first and slid the puck past Woll to make it 2-0.
Warren Foegle added another goal for the Senators at 17:53. The left-winger intercepted a Philippe Myers pass and snapped a shot from between the circles through Woll’s five-hole, extending the margin to 3-0.
The Leafs pushed back a little. John Tavares converted on a give-and-go with Easton Cowan to narrow the gap to 3-1 at the 18:14 mark of the second.
Then Cowan cut the lead to one with his 9th on the season, a rebound shot over a sprawled out Linus Ullmark at 4:52 of the third.
But the Senators put their skates back on the gas pedal after that. Michael Amadio tapped home a goal at 9:41, and Ridley Greg finished off a three-on-two at 13:11 to make the final 5-3.
Next up, the Maple Leafs head to Boston Tuesday night to take on the Bruins.
