Tim Mayza designated for assignment by the Blue Jays

Tim Mayza was the longest tenured player to wear a Toronto Blue Jays uniform as of 2024, but after Saturday morning, he no longer holds that title. The Blue Jays designated the reliever for assignment, they also called up reliever Jose Cuas from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move.

Mayza was selected in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. Mayza played three years playing NCAA Division II baseball at Millersville University in Millersville, Pennsylvania before getting drafted.

The veteran left hander spent four years in the Blue Jays’ farm system before making his big league debut on August 15, 2017 at the age of 25.

Mayza, now 32, spent all seven seasons of his big league career in Toronto (missing 2020 recovering from Tommy John surgery). In his time, he made 352 appearances (all in relief), with a record of 20-8, a 3.87 ERA, 1.94 WHIP, an ERA+ of 50, and 292 strikeouts in 283 2/3 innings. He’s been a key piece of the Blue Jays’ bullpen, recording a career-best 1.52 ERA in 60 relief appearances in 2023. Unfortunately for him, he’s had a rough go in 2024, sporting an 8.03 ERA in 35 relief appearances.

The Blue Jays will continue their series against the Yankees as they get ready to play game three on Saturday afternoon.
