The Toronto FC finally returned home Saturday afternoon for their long awaited home opener at BMO Field after beginning the season with three straight road matches. The Reds hosted the New York Red Bulls in the first home game of the 2026 season in front of a fired up Toronto crowd.
Toronto delivered exactly what fans were hoping for with a big early season win on home turf!
The breakthrough came before halftime when Dániel Sallói found space in the box and buried a finish to give Toronto the lead. The goal was set up by a strong play from Djordje Mihailović, who provided the key assist that created the scoring chance.
Toronto controlled much of the tempo through the middle of the match, with veterans like Jonathan Osorio helping maintain possession and push the attack forward.
New York pushed hard late trying to equalize, with attacking threats such as Emil Forsberg and striker Eric Maxim Choupo Moting creating pressure in the final minutes. Toronto’s defense held strong through the closing stages to secure the win in the home opener.
For Toronto, the offensive highlights came from:
• Dániel Sallói with the game winning goal
• Djordje Mihailović recording the assist
Top attacking threats on the Red Bulls side included:
• Emil Forsberg who helped drive the New York attack
• Eric Maxim Choupo Moting who was active in the box late in the match
The victory gave Toronto a positive start in front of their home supporters after opening the season away from Toronto.
Looking at the season overall, there is legitimate reason for optimism. The club has struggled badly in recent seasons, finishing near the bottom of the Eastern Conference more than once. However the early signs in 2026 look more promising. The team has already picked up points early in the season and the attack looks more balanced with contributions coming from several players instead of relying on just one star.
It is still extremely early in the season, but the energy around the team looks different. The midfield is creating more chances and younger players are starting to step into bigger roles alongside experienced veterans.
Toronto supporters know the past few years have been rough, but the early performances suggest this group could be far more competitive in the Eastern Conference if the momentum continues.
For now, starting the home schedule with a win is exactly what the club and its fans needed!
♥️ All For One means all of us.
👏👏👏 TFC!!!
