Raptors suffer first loss of the season

The Toronto Raptors saw their two-game winning streak come to an end Sunday night, falling 117–94 to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Minneapolis.

Toronto struggled to match Minnesota’s shooting efficiency, rebounding strength and third-quarter intensity in its first defeat of the 2026–27 NBA regular season.

The Raptors entered the matchup with momentum after dominant victories over Chicago and Washington.

However, they faced a difficult challenge against a Timberwolves team that extended its unbeaten start to three games.

Toronto was also without star forward Kawhi Leonard, who was ruled out because of swelling in his left knee.

Game summary

Minnesota established control early, using its size and perimeter shooting to put Toronto under pressure.

The Timberwolves held the Raptors to just 21 points in the opening quarter, taking a 32–21 lead behind an efficient offensive performance.

Toronto attempted to fight back before halftime, trimming the deficit to eight points.

The Raptors showed some resilience, but their momentum disappeared after the break.

The decisive stretch came in the third quarter. Minnesota unleashed a 22–6 run to open the second half, building a commanding advantage and outscoring Toronto 35–15 in the period.

The Timberwolves carried a 90–62 lead into the fourth quarter, leaving the Raptors with too much ground to recover.

Minnesota maintained its advantage down the stretch to secure the 23-point victory.

Top performers

Anthony Edwards — Timberwolves

26 points

Edwards led Minnesota’s attack, shooting 10-for-18 from the field in just 27 minutes.

His scoring helped establish the tone for the home team’s dominant performance

Ja’Kobe Walter — Raptors

22 points

Walter led Toronto in scoring, stepping into the starting lineup with Leonard unavailable.

His offensive production was a bright spot despite the defeat.

RJ Barrett — Raptors

20 points

Barrett provided a consistent scoring presence, but Toronto needed more support across the lineup to challenge Minnesota.

Immanuel Quickley — Raptors

19 points

Quickley helped keep Toronto competitive offensively, although the Raptors could not overcome Minnesota’s defensive pressure and third-quarter surge.

Three key takeaways

The third quarter decided the game.

Minnesota’s 35–15 advantage after halftime transformed a competitive first half into a one-sided finish.

Rebounding made the difference. The Timberwolves won the battle on the boards 49–34, creating a substantial advantage in possession opportunities.

Toronto needs a stronger team-wide response.

Walter, Barrett and Quickley combined for 61 points, but Scottie Barnes struggled from the field, missing all 12 of his attempts, including five three-pointers.

What’s next

The Raptors return home to face the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, October 28.

Toronto will look to regroup, improve its shooting efficiency and get back into the win column.

Minnesota, meanwhile, heads to Cleveland on Monday looking to continue its unbeaten start.

Final verdict: The Raptors showed flashes of offensive production but were outmatched after halftime.

Minnesota’s shooting, rebounding and defensive execution proved decisive, handing Toronto its first defeat of the young season
