The Toronto Tempo’s losing streak reached seven games on Wednesday night as they fell 92-81 to the Golden State Valkyries in San Francisco. Despite a spirited effort and another strong offensive outing from Nyara Sabally, Toronto could not contain Golden State’s balanced attack in the second half.
Toronto looked sharp early, using a 16-0 second-quarter run to seize control of the game. Crisp ball movement and improved defensive intensity gave the Tempo a brief lead, but the Valkyries answered before halftime and carried that momentum into the final two quarters.
Nyara Sabally led the Tempo with 22 points, continuing her excellent recent form. All-Star Marina Mabrey returned to the lineup and contributed 12 points, while newcomer Aneesah Morrow continued to adjust after being acquired at the trade deadline, showing flashes of the rebounding ability that Toronto hopes will strengthen its frontcourt.
Golden State took over in the fourth quarter behind Janelle Salaün, who scored 21 points, while Kayla Thornton added 20 points. The Valkyries’ efficient shooting and defensive pressure forced key Tempo turnovers down the stretch, allowing them to pull away for the double-digit victory.
The defeat drops Toronto to 10-20, leaving the expansion club searching for answers as the playoff race slips further out of reach. With Morrow now in the fold and Mabrey back healthy, the Tempo will hope the roster changes can spark a turnaround as they continue their western road trip.
