The first week of group matches has come to a wrap and it has been a spectacular start to the 2024 European. Some teams have definitely outshined others. While some players have also started to make their mark in the competition.
The host nation Germany had a thrilling 5-1 win against Scotland. Spain had a historic night winning 3-0, with Alvaro Morata scoring a goal for Spain allowing him to become joint-third most all-time goalscorer in the competition with 7 goals, alongside Alan Shearer and Frenchman Antoine Greizmann. Spains Euro’s start also marks the debut of the youngest player in the competitions history Lamine Yamal at the age of 16 years old. The milestones of the comeptiton do not end their with Italy winning 2-1 aginst Albania. Albania made history scoring the fastest goal in Euro’s history with a goal from N.Bajrami at the 1’minute mark.
Switzerland had a commanding 3-1 win against Hungary, and the Dutch beat Poland 2-1. Denmark drew against Slovenia 1-1 with Eriksen scoring a goal for Denmark in the 17’th minute. This nearly marks 3 years since his cardiac arrest on the pitch at the same competition in 2021.
One of the favourites to win the competition England won 1-0 against Serbia with their superstar Bellingham scoring in the 13’th minute of the match. Other favourites France somehow got away with a 1-0 win with an own goal coming from Austria.
Romania and Turkiye both won 3-1 against Ukraine and Georgia respectively. Belgium had an upset in their first match with a 0-1 loss against Slovakia. Portugal played the last match of matchday 1 and won in a hard fought victory of 2-1 against Czechia, with the second goal being scored in stoppage time by F.Conceicao
Now onto matchday 2 of the group stages. With blockbuster matches such as Spain vs the Euro’s reigning champions Italy and Netherlands vs the World Cup runners-up France. Every team will be looking to climb up the table in each of their groups for European glory.
