What Starts Well Ends Well

Joseph Woll has been the star of the road trip thus far. After a stellar performance in Vancouver Saturday night, the Leafs’ netminder put forth an equally impressive effort Monday, leading Toronto to a 4-2 win over Calgary at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Maple Leafs jumped on the Flames early, scoring 35 seconds into the game. John Tavares intercepted a Calgary pass just inside the Toronto blue line, pushed the puck forward to a streaking William Nylander, who skated in alone and beat Dustin Wolf with a wrist shot to make it 1-0.

In a quickly played first period with very few whistles. The Nylander tally stood as the only goal.
Both teams’ offences restarted in the second with Toronto extending their lead at the 7:17 mark. Nylander won a battle behind the net, then centred a pass to Matias Maccelli in the slot. The winger sniped a shot past Wolf, doubling the lead.

Toronto added another goal on Troy Stecher ‘s 3rd of the season at 9:24. The blue-liner snuck down toward the net, was the recipient of another nifty Nylander set up, before backhanding the puck by Wolf, stretching the margin to 3-0.

The Flames fought back, getting two quick ones of their own. Former Leaf, Nazem Kadri, struck first, ripping a shortside goal over Woll’s glove to close the gap to 3-1 at 13:15. Joel Farabee made it a one-goal game with a tip-in at 15:46.

But that is where the rally ended. Woll stopped all 13 shots he faced in the third period and
Bobby McMann added an empty netter at 19:35 to seal the deal and finish off the Leafs 4-2 victory.

Next up, the Maple Leafs are at it again tomorrow night, visiting the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.
