Saskatchewan Roughriders 28, Toronto Argonauts 24
The Toronto Argonauts suffered a heartbreaking 28–24 loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday night at Mosaic Stadium, surrendering the lead in the final minutes.
Toronto controlled much of the contest and carried a 24–21 advantage into the fourth quarter. The Argos were unable to close the game out, however, as Saskatchewan mounted its decisive late drive.
With 2:57 remaining, Roughriders short-yardage quarterback Tommy Stevens powered into the end zone from two yards out, putting Saskatchewan ahead 28–24. The Riders had not held the lead until the final minutes.
The defeat drops Toronto to 5–6, while Saskatchewan improves to 7–4.
Game story
The Argonauts entered Regina looking to build on their impressive 39–20 victory over Hamilton the previous week. Toronto had also defeated Saskatchewan 40–34 earlier this season, but the Riders turned the rematch around with a resilient fourth-quarter comeback.
Toronto’s biggest problem was finishing drives and protecting its late lead. Saskatchewan’s defence kept the game within reach before the Riders’ offence produced the winning touchdown.
Turning point
The decisive moment came late in the fourth quarter. After trailing for most of the evening, Saskatchewan finally moved in front on Stevens’ short-yardage touchdown. Toronto then needed a late scoring drive but could not regain the advantage.
What it means
The loss is a significant setback for the Argos in the crowded CFL playoff race. Toronto had won three of its previous four games entering the night and was trying to climb above .500.
The Argos now turn their attention to Labour Day Weekend, when they visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on September 7. Toronto won the previous meeting 39–20.
