Second period proves costly

Toronto’s defensive breakdowns in the second period proved decisive.

Utah scored four times in the frame, including goals from Vincent Trocheck, Mikhail Sergachev, Dylan Guenther and Mackenzie Weegar.

The Leafs found some offence of their own, but they entered the third period trailing by three goals.

Toronto’s scorers

Auston Matthews: Power-play goal, assisted by John Tavares.

Jack Roslovic: Goal, assisted by Kirill Marchenko and Matthews.

John Tavares: Power-play goal, assisted by Anthony Stolarz.

Toronto’s fourth goal: The Leafs continued their push in the third, but could not complete the comeback.

Three key takeaways

Defensive coverage needs attention.

Allowing four goals in one period put Toronto in a difficult position.

The power play provided a lifeline. Matthews and Tavares both scored with the man advantage.

The comeback showed resilience. Toronto battled back to make the finish competitive, but the early deficit proved too large.

Injury and lineup notes

Chris Tanev remained on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, forcing Toronto to adjust its defensive pairings.

John Tavares returned to the lineup after missing the previous game for personal reasons.

What’s next

The Maple Leafs return to the road-trip schedule with a matchup against the Buffalo Sabres on October 15, followed by the New York Islanders on October 17.

Toronto will need a more consistent defensive effort to get back into the win column.

Final assessment: Toronto showed offensive fight but paid for a disastrous second period.

The 5–4 defeat leaves the Leafs with work to do on defensive structure and game management before their next contest.
