CFL Week 20 · October 16, 2026 · TD Place, Ottawa

Ottawa REDBLACKS 40, Toronto Argonauts 39

The Toronto Argonauts suffered a heartbreaking one-point defeat against the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday night, falling 40–39 in a wild Eastern Division battle at TD Place.

Toronto’s offence produced enough points to win, but Ottawa ultimately edged the defending playoff-bound visitors in a dramatic finish.

First-quarter action

Toronto struck first with a special-teams touchdown.

Ethan John recovered a blocked Ottawa punt and returned it 16 yards for a score, although the convert was unsuccessful.

Ottawa answered with a one-yard touchdown run by Daniel Adeboboye before Paul Geelen’s field goal gave the home side a 10–6 advantage.

Second quarter — Ottawa takes control

The Argonauts responded with a one-yard touchdown run from Cameron Porter and a 43-yard field goal by Lirim Hajrullahu.

However, Adeboboye scored his second rushing touchdown of the night, and Geelen added a 53-yard field goal.

At halftime, Ottawa led 23–16. Toronto also suffered a significant setback when starting quarterback Chad Kelly left with an apparent lower-body injury, forcing Nick Arbuckle into action.

Third quarter — Toronto fights back

The teams traded scoring drives in an entertaining third quarter. Geelen connected from 51 yards to put Ottawa ahead 27–24, but Arbuckle answered with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Mital.

Toronto converted the two-point attempt through Arbuckle’s pass to Damonte Coxie, tying the contest at 24–24 earlier in the quarter.

Ottawa’s continued scoring pressure kept the game close.

Fourth quarter — heartbreaking finish

Toronto appeared poised to escape with a victory after building a 39–33 lead late in the game.

Ottawa rookie quarterback Bryson Barnes, making his first CFL start, engineered a dramatic final drive.

With only six seconds remaining, Barnes connected with Ayden Eberhardt for the decisive touchdown, completing Ottawa’s stunning 40–39 comeback.

The play ended the REDBLACKS’ lengthy losing streak and delivered their first victory of the 2026 season.

Key performers

Bryson Barnes, Ottawa: Threw for 339 yards in his first CFL start and delivered the winning touchdown pass.

Ayden Eberhardt, Ottawa: Caught the decisive touchdown with six seconds remaining.

Nick Arbuckle, Toronto: Took over after Kelly’s injury and helped keep the Argonauts competitive.

Kevin Mital, Toronto: Caught a key third-quarter touchdown from Arbuckle.

Daniel Adeboboye, Ottawa: Scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half.

Ethan John, Toronto: Produced the game’s opening touchdown with his blocked-punt return.

Three major turning points

Kelly’s injury: Toronto lost its starting quarterback early, forcing a change in offensive leadership.

Ottawa’s late resurgence: Barnes kept the REDBLACKS in contention despite their winless season to that point.

The final six seconds: Eberhardt’s touchdown transformed a potential Toronto victory into a one-point Ottawa triumph.

Final verdict

The Argonauts will regret letting this game slip away. Their special teams delivered an early touchdown, and the offence generated 39 points, but the defence could not prevent Ottawa’s decisive late scoring drive.

For Ottawa, this was a landmark victory that ended a 22-game losing streak dating back to 2025.

For Toronto, the result serves as a warning that offensive production alone is not enough when a game reaches its final moments.
