A Mammoth Beating

The Utah Mammoth took advantage of a worn-down Toronto team, drubbing the Maple Leafs 6-1 Tuesday night at the Delta Center.

Twenty-four hours removed from one of their best games of the year, perhaps the Maple Leafs were due for a letdown. They managed to stay competitive for a period, but as the game progressed, the tired Toronto legs could not keep up with the Mammoth, who ended the Leafs’ 10-game point streak.

Michael Carcone opened the scoring for Utah, ripping a shot from the face-off dot past Dennis Hildeby at 3.22 of the first.

The Mammoth added to their lead in the second with a trio of goals. The first two were from Dylan Guenther. The winger’s 22nd goal of the season came on a rush up the boards and a snap shot over the shoulder of Hildeby at 5:26. Just over a minute later, Guenther took advantage of a pair of fallen Leafs’ defenders moving in on Hildeby and beating him glove side to make it 3-0.

JJ Peterka added his 16th of the season, beating Hildeby through a screen at the 15:25 mark of the second to extend the lead to 4-0.

Toronto played slightly better at the beginning of the third period, creating numerous chances, but Calle Jarnkrok was the only one who could beat Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka. Jarnkrok’s first goal in 19 games came off a rebound from an Oliver Ekman-Larsson shot at 3:30.

Utah pushed the margin back to four on Jack McBain’s tap-in goal at 13:39. Mammoth forward Danill But finished the scoring, snapping home his 3rd of the year at 16:54 to make the final 6-1.

Up next, Toronto is headed to Vegas Thursday night to take on the Golden Knights.
