The Toronto Blue Jays fell to a sweep at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies in a 4-2 loss on Wednesday afternoon.
Bowden Francis (8-3, 3.66) got the start for the Blue Jays, while Cristopher Sanchez (9-9, 3.49) took the mound for the Phillies. Francis tossed 6 innings, allowing three runs across six hits, walking none and punching out six to take his fourth loss of the year. Sanchez threw 7 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking none and striking out seven and taking his 10th win of the year.
Kyle Schwarber tied a big league record in the 1st inning, leading off the game with a solo homer to hit his 13th leadoff homer of the year, putting the Phillies up 1-0.
The Blue Jays struck back as they scored in the bottom half of the 1st. RBI doubles from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk gave the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the 2nd, Kody Clemens hit a two-run shot to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead.
The score would stay the same until the top of the 9th when J.T. Realmuto stepped up and hit a solo shot to lead off the inning and extend the Phillies’ lead to 4-2.
The Blue Jays went quietly in the 9th to drop the series to the Phillies in a 4-2 loss.
The Jays will get an off day on Thursday as they will make their way to Truist Park to take on the Atlanta Braves for three games. Kevin Gausman (12-10, 4.07) will toe the rubber for the Blue Jays while Max Fried (8-8, 3.52) will do so for the Braves as both teams will play game one on Friday night.
