The Toronto Blue Jays fell in another one-run game as the Tampa Bay Rays swept the Jays, beating them for the third time in three days.
The Blue Jays ran with a bullpen day and elected to go with Ryan Burr (0-1, 3.72) as their opener while the Rays sent Shane Baz (3-3, 3.21) to the mound.
Burr tossed a small 1 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit, walking none and punching out three, taking a no decision. Baz threw 6 innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and one walk, striking out six as he earned his fourth victory of the year.
The Blue Jays struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly from Leo Jimenez in the top of the 4th.
The Rays answered in the bottom half of the 6th, taking a 2-1 lead on a two-run homer from Jonathan Aranda, who hit his third homer in three straight games.
An RBI single from Ernie Clement tied the game at two in the 7th inning.
Tampa Bay would retake the lead in the bottom half of the 7thBr when Jose Siri scored on a sacrifice fly from Christopher Morel.
A solo shot from Brandon Lowe would extend the Rays’ lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the 8th.
The Blue Jays wouldn’t go away quietly in the top of the 9th. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. cut the Tampa Bay lead to 4-3 with an RBI single. But, unfortunately for the Jays, it was not enough as they fell to the Rays for the third straight game.
The Jays will return home as they prepare to host the Boston Red Sox for three games starting Monday night. Chris Bassitt (10-13, 4.16) will get the ball for the Blue Jays as Tanner Houck (8-10, 3.21) will for the Red Sox in the series opener.
