The Buffalo Bills head to California looking to rebound from their first defeat of the 2026 NFL season when they face the Los Angeles Rams in a high-profile Monday Night Football showdown at SoFi Stadium.

Buffalo enters the matchup at 3–1 after losing 29–26 to the New England Patriots in Week 4.

The Rams are 2–2 and arrive with momentum after rallying to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles.

With two former NFL MVP quarterbacks in Josh Allen and Matthew Stafford, the matchup promises a compelling battle between two teams with postseason ambitions.

Quarterback Josh Allen remains the centrepiece of Buffalo’s offence.

The Bills opened the season with explosive performances, but their loss to New England exposed the importance of finishing drives and avoiding costly mistakes.

Running back James Cook will be another major factor.

His ability to produce explosive runs and keep the offence ahead of the chains can prevent the Rams from concentrating exclusively on Allen and the passing game.

Buffalo must also protect Allen against a Los Angeles defence that has been effective at limiting opposing passing attacks.

Getting the ball out quickly, using play-action and spreading the field could help the Bills create favourable matchups.

Defensively, the Bills need a disciplined performance against Los Angeles’ collection of playmakers.

The absence of defensive tackle Ed Oliver is particularly significant because it removes an important interior presence from Buffalo’s defensive front.

Los Angeles Rams: A Dangerous Home Opponent

The Rams will look to exploit Buffalo’s defensive vulnerabilities with quarterback Matthew Stafford directing an offence featuring wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, along with running back Kyren Williams.

Stafford’s ability to read coverages and deliver accurate throws makes him a difficult opponent, particularly when Nacua and Adams can win their individual matchups.

Williams adds another dimension through his rushing ability and receiving contributions.

The return of defensive tackle Aaron Donald gives Los Angeles another important presence in the trenches. His ability to disrupt the pocket and challenge Buffalo’s running game could be a decisive factor in determining whether the Rams control the line of scrimmage

Three Keys to Victory for Buffalo

1 Protect Josh Allen

Buffalo needs to keep Allen upright and avoid turnovers.

Sustained protection will give him time to attack the Rams’ secondary and create opportunities downfield.

2 Establish the running game

James Cook must be a consistent contributor.

A productive ground attack can slow the pass rush, create play-action opportunities and help Buffalo control possession.

3 Contain Nacua and Adams

Buffalo’s secondary must limit explosive completions and prevent Stafford from finding his receivers in space. Pressure without disciplined coverage could leave the Bills vulnerable to big plays.

Betting Outlook

The matchup has the potential to produce an entertaining, high-scoring game.

Before kickoff, the Rams were listed as approximately 3.5-point home favourites by some sportsbooks, with an over/under of 54.5 points.

Lines can vary by sportsbook and change before kickoff.

Buffalo’s offence has demonstrated the ability to generate points in bunches, but Los Angeles’ defensive strength and home-field advantage make this a challenging road assignment.

The Bills’ ability to protect Allen and control the game’s tempo will be central to the outcome.

DJ Moore, wide receiver: Questionable with a shoulder injury.

Jaylen Watson, cornerback: Cleared to play.

Prediction: Buffalo Bills beat the Los Angeles Rams by four  points 35 -31

The Rams get the edge because of their home-field advantage, their defensive ability to challenge opposing passing games and the combination of Stafford, Nacua, Adams and Williams.

Buffalo has the firepower to win, but the Bills’ defensive absences could prove costly in a close contest.

Bottom line: Monday Night Football

presents Buffalo with an immediate opportunity to respond to its first loss of the season.

If Allen protects the football and Cook establishes the run, the Bills can win on the road.

However, Los Angeles has enough offensive weapons to make this a difficult test for Buffalo’s defence.
