Canada is headed to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in the Round of 32.

The breakthrough finally came in second-half stoppage time, when Stephen Eustáquio fired home the winning goal in the 90+2nd minute, sending Canada into the knockout stage for the first time in the modern era.

Canada controlled much of the match, creating the better scoring opportunities throughout. South Africa defended resolutely, including a goal-line clearance and several key saves, while Canada was also left frustrated after a first-half penalty appeal was waved away despite strong protests from head coach Jesse Marsch.

Captain Alphonso Davies, still managing a hamstring injury, began the match on the bench before entering in the second half and helping Canada increase the pressure that eventually produced the winner.

The historic victory sends Canada into the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of the Netherlands vs. Morocco Round of 32 match. With confidence growing and the home supporters behind them, Canada remains one of the tournament’s biggest success stories.
