The match started on a very even playing field. Argentina then broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with a header by Lisandro Martinez, marking his first-ever international goal for his country. Argentina focused on their defensive play, holding onto possession and ending the first half 1-0.
It seemed to be an easy win for Argentina until, in stoppage time, Ecuador pressed hard and converted a goal with a shot by Kevin Rodriguez in the 91st minute. The game then went to penalties, where Messi missed the first one, giving Ecuador some hope. However, a masterclass from the Argentinian goalkeeper D. Martinez, who made two spectacular saves, saw Argentina through to the semi-finals after a 4-2 penalty shootout victory.
