The first match of the quarter-finals has commenced, with Argentina facing Ecuador. The powerhouse that is Argentina is unlikely to be stopped given their performances so far. Out of 40 meetings between them, Ecuador has only beaten Argentina 5 times.
The match started on a very even playing field. Argentina then broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with a header by Lisandro Martinez, marking his first-ever international goal for his country. Argentina focused on their defensive play, holding onto possession and ending the first half 1-0.
It seemed to be an easy win for Argentina until, in stoppage time, Ecuador pressed hard and converted a goal with a shot by Kevin Rodriguez in the 91st minute. The game then went to penalties, where Messi missed the first one, giving Ecuador some hope. However, a masterclass from the Argentinian goalkeeper D. Martinez, who made two spectacular saves, saw Argentina through to the semi-finals after a 4-2 penalty shootout victory.
