The NFL’s opening week concludes with a massive AFC West showdown as the Denver Broncos visit the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET, with the game airing on ESPN/ABC.
The main storyline: Mahomes is back
All eyes will be on Patrick Mahomes, who is expected to return as Kansas City’s starting quarterback after missing the end of last season with an ACL injury. This will be his first regular-season game since the injury and his first meaningful action of 2026.
The Chiefs are looking to rebound from a disappointing 6–11 campaign in 2025, while Denver enters the season with considerably higher expectations after going 14–3 and winning the AFC West last season.
Denver’s advantage: Bo Nix
Bo Nix returns for his third NFL season after establishing himself as a dangerous prime-time quarterback. He is 6–1 in career prime-time starts, and he has had considerable success against Kansas City.
In four career games against the Chiefs, Nix has thrown seven touchdowns against only one interception, completing 73.1% of his passes.

Denver also added explosive receiver Jaylen Waddle, who makes his Broncos regular-season debut. His speed could force Kansas City’s revamped secondary to play deeper.
Kansas City’s biggest questions
The Chiefs have plenty of questions despite having Mahomes back.
Their offensive line is a major concern, with Khalil Benson expected to make his first NFL start at left tackle because of injuries. That is particularly important against Denver’s aggressive pass rush.

Kansas City has also revamped its secondary, meaning communication and chemistry will be tested immediately against Nix, Waddle and Courtland Sutton.
Three keys to victory
1. Protect Mahomes
Denver’s pass rush cannot be allowed to dictate the game. Kansas City needs manageable down-and-distance situations.
2. Establish Kenneth Walker III
The Chiefs added Walker to strengthen the running game. A productive ground attack would take pressure off Mahomes in his return.
3. Denver must win third down
Broncos coach Sean Payton has specifically emphasized third-down efficiency, time of possession and turnover margin as crucial factors in a Week 1 Monday-night game.

Prediction
This is an extremely difficult game to call. Denver won both meetings in 2025 and has won three straight against Kansas City, while the Chiefs have the home-field advantage and the return of Mahomes.

Expect a close, physical AFC West battle with the result potentially coming down to the final possession.
