The inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s new Madring delivered a major championship statement as Kimi Antonelli took victory for Mercedes, beating Max Verstappen and Lando Norris.

Final Results

Max Verstappen — Red Bull — +4.351s

Lando Norris — McLaren — +5.089s

How the race unfolded

Lando Norris started from pole and initially controlled proceedings, but the race changed dramatically when an early Virtual Safety Car created a strategic opportunity for Antonelli and Verstappen. Norris was unable to capitalize on the timing of the stoppage and subsequently lost the lead.

Antonelli then produced a controlled drive at the front. Verstappen kept the pressure on, but the Mercedes driver maintained enough of a cushion to claim his eighth Grand Prix victory of 2026.

Norris recovered to third but could not find a way past Verstappen in the closing stages.

Key storylines

Antonelli strengthens championship lead: The Mercedes youngster extended his advantage over George Russell to 81 points.

Norris suffers strategic heartbreak: He had appeared in position to fight for victory before the VSC altered the pit-stop picture.

Verstappen finishes second: Red Bull’s driver resisted Norris and secured another podium.

Hamilton retires: Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari suffered brake problems, ending his race after just six laps.

Madring debut: Madrid hosted its first F1 race on the 5.414-km, 22-corner circuit.

Overtaking concerns: The new circuit generated significant criticism for its limited passing opportunities, with fewer than 10 overtakes reported during the 57-lap race.

Championship impact

Antonelli’s victory was arguably the biggest statement of the 2026 season so far. After 14 rounds, Mercedes has established a commanding position in the Constructors’ Championship, while Antonelli continues to build a substantial advantage in the Drivers’ standings.

Next stop: Azerbaijan Grand Prix, September 24–26, as the championship moves to Baku.
