The Sabres’ rally fell short in a season-ending 3-2 overtime loss to the Canadiens, who clinched the second-round series 4-3.
Philip Danault opened the scoring for Montreal at 4:30 of the first period, tipping in an Alexandre Texier pass from the front of the net by Sabres goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. It was Danault’s first goal of the playoffs.
The Canadiens extended their lead at 14:29 of the first period on the power play, as Zachary Bolduc ripped a snapshot from inside the circle over Luukkonen to make it 2-0.
Buffalo answered at 13:19 of the second period, as Jordan Greenway deflected a Mattias Samuelsson shot past Jacob Dobes to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Sabres tied it at 6:27 of the third period. Rasmus Dahlin beat Dobes with a quick shot to the post, but that proved to be Buffalo’s last highlight .
Alex Newhook ended the Sabres season at 11:22 of overtime, wiring a partially screened wrist shot past Luukkonen and in for the 3-2 win.
