Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys
Week 5 — Thursday, October 8, 2026
Thursday Night Football heads to AT&T Stadium with two teams heading in very different directions. Dallas is 2-2 and coming off a 34-30 comeback victory over Houston, while Tampa Bay is 0-4 and desperately searching for its first win.
The Quarterback Story
The biggest storyline is under center for Tampa Bay. Baker Mayfield is officially out with a right-thumb injury, meaning rookie Jalon Daniels will make his second consecutive start. Daniels threw for 148 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while adding 55 rushing yards in his first NFL start.
Dallas counters with Dak Prescott, who is coming off a 335-yard performance against Houston. Prescott has six touchdown passes without an interception since the season opener and will face a Tampa defense that has been much better than the Buccaneers’ 0-4 record suggests.
Key Players
Dallas Cowboys
Dak Prescott — Quarterback
CeeDee Lamb — Wide Receiver
Javonte Williams — Running Back
Micah Parsons — Defensive Leader
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Jalon Daniels — Quarterback
Bucky Irving — Running Back
Chris Godwin Jr. — Wide Receiver
Emeka Egbuka — Wide Receiver
Vita Vea — Defensive Tackle
Three Keys to Victory
1. Dallas must pressure Daniels
The Cowboys need to make the rookie quarterback uncomfortable early. Tampa’s offense has struggled to consistently generate production, and putting Daniels into obvious passing situations could create turnover opportunities.
2. Tampa Bay must establish Bucky Irving
Irving rushed for 61 yards on 16 carries against Green Bay. Tampa needs to take pressure off Daniels with an effective ground game.
Blogging The Boys
3. Dallas needs to protect Prescott
The Cowboys’ offense has been one of the league’s most productive units, averaging 30.5 points per game. Tampa Bay’s defense, however, has held opponents below 300 total yards in three consecutive games.
Injury Report
Tampa Bay will be without Mayfield, Antoine Winfield Jr., Benjamin Morrison and SirVocea Dennis. Winfield’s absence is particularly significant for a Buccaneers defense already dealing with injuries.
Dallas will be without DeMarvion Overshown, Cobie Durant and Drew Shelton. Guard Tyler Smith is questionable after returning to full practice Wednesday.
Betting Outlook
Dallas entered Wednesday as an approximately 8.5-point favorite, with the game total around 47.5 points. The spread had moved from an opening number around Dallas -10.
Prediction
Tampa Bay’s defense should keep this competitive early, but the combination of a rookie quarterback, a short week and several defensive injuries makes the challenge extremely difficult.
Final Prediction: Dallas Cowboys 31, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17
Pick: Cowboys -8.5
The biggest question is whether Tampa Bay can keep Daniels out of obvious passing situations. If Dallas gets an early lead, the Cowboys should have enough offensive firepower to pull away.
