Logan Thompson stood tall Wednesday night, turning aside 21 shots to backstop the Washington Capitals to a 4-0 shutout of the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.
Toronto, held scoreless just twice entering the game, struggled to create sustained pressure offensively. The night also took an early turn when starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz left in the first period with an injury after stretching to make a save. Joseph Woll came on in relief, but Washington seized control soon after.
The Capitals opened the scoring at 13:49 of the first period after Toronto was caught in transition. Dylan Strome finished off a two-on-one opportunity to make it 1-0.
Washington doubled its lead just 40 seconds into the second period when rookie winger Ryan Leonard slipped behind the Toronto defence, took a lead pass from Tom Wilson, and beat Woll on a breakaway.
The Capitals made it 3-0 at 2:53 of the second when Martin Fehérváry’s shot deflected off Maple Leafs defenceman Brandon Carlo and into the net. Cole Hutson added an empty-net goal at 16:10 of the third period to close out the scoring.
The Maple Leafs will look to bounce back Thursday night when they visit the New York Islanders at UBS Arena
