The Toronto Blue Jays opened their three-game series in Washington with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Nationals, snapping back into the win column after dropping their previous game in Boston.
Toronto jumped ahead early, manufacturing runs with timely hitting. Myles Straw sparked the offense with two hits, including a key RBI single in the fourth inning that gave the Blue Jays the lead for good. The lineup did just enough to support a strong effort from the pitching staff.
The Nationals answered with solo home runs from Luis Urías and pinch-hitter Andrés Chaparro, but the Blue Jays bullpen held firm. Mason Fluharty earned the victory in relief, while Louis Varland slammed the door with his 22nd save of the season.
Washington welcomed veteran Max Scherzer back from the injured list on his 42nd birthday. Scherzer struck out four batters in his return, but Toronto capitalized early before the Nationals could rally late.
The win improves Toronto’s confidence as it continues its road trip, with the Blue Jays looking to build momentum and take the series against Washington after a difficult stretch in the standings.
