Defending champion Argentina booked its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
England broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Anthony Gordon finished a swift attack to give the Three Lions a deserved lead. England defended well for much of the second half, but Argentina’s relentless pressure finally paid off.
Enzo Fernández equalized in the 85th minute after being set up by Lionel Messi, swinging the momentum firmly toward the reigning champions. Then, in second-half stoppage time, Lautaro Martínez headed home the winner from another pinpoint Messi assist, completing a stunning late turnaround.
Messi once again proved decisive, providing two assists and leading Argentina to a second consecutive World Cup Final. England was left heartbroken after coming within minutes of ending its 60-year wait for another World Cup final appearance.
