The Toronto Blue Jays opened their four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays with another disappointing performance, falling 7-1 at Rogers Centre. The loss continued Toronto’s post-All-Star break struggles and allowed the division-leading Rays to strengthen their grip on first place in the American League East.
Tampa Bay struck first when Victor Mesa Jr. launched a solo home run in the opening inning. The Rays kept the pressure on throughout the night, capitalizing on Blue Jays defensive mistakes and timely hitting. Mesa Jr., Cedric Mullins, and Nick Fortes each homered, while Junior Caminero finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Toronto’s lone run came in the fourth inning. George Springer singled, stole second base, advanced on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by Alejandro Kirk. Unfortunately, that was the only breakthrough against Rays starter Nick Martinez, who held the Blue Jays to one run over six strong innings.
Dylan Cease took the loss despite striking out seven batters over six innings. Defensive miscues behind him proved costly, leading to multiple unearned runs that put the game out of reach.
Offensively, Toronto collected eight hits, with Springer, Ernie Clement, and Nathan Lukes recording two apiece, but the club was unable to deliver with runners in scoring position. The defeat dropped the Blue Jays to 1-3 on their current homestand and further behind Tampa Bay in the AL East race.
Next Game: The Blue Jays will look to even the series on Tuesday as Kevin Gausman is scheduled to face Tampa Bay’s Drew Rasmussen in Game 2.
