The Toronto Blue Jays were unable to build on Saturday’s dominant victory, falling 6-1 to the Boston Red Sox in the rubber match of their three-game series at Fenway Park. The loss denied Toronto a much-needed series win as the club continues to battle through a difficult season.
Kevin Gausman turned in a respectable outing, allowing three earned runs over six innings while striking out six. He kept the Blue Jays within striking distance, but Toronto’s offense struggled to capitalize on its opportunities against Boston pitching.
The Blue Jays collected nine hits, but went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving several chances on the bases. Andrés Giménez was Toronto’s brightest offensive performer, finishing with three hits and driving in the club’s only run in the ninth inning. Alejandro Kirk, George Springer, Daulton Varsho, and Ernie Clement also chipped in with hits, but the lineup couldn’t string together the timely offense needed for a comeback.
Toronto’s bullpen ran into trouble in the seventh inning, allowing Boston to pull away with three insurance runs and put the game out of reach.
Despite splitting the series in Boston, the Blue Jays leave Fenway with momentum from Dylan Cease’s one-hit shutout on Saturday but continue searching for consistency as they head to Washington for their next series against the Nationals.
