TORONTO — The Toronto Argonauts saw their four-game winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon, falling 24–17 to the BC Lions at BMO Field.

Despite a strong passing performance from quarterback Nick Arbuckle and a late opportunity to force overtime, Toronto could not overcome a relentless kicking performance from BC’s Sean Whyte.

Whyte delivered a club-record eight field goals, accounting for 24 points and providing the difference in a tightly contested Week 18 matchup.

First Half: Toronto Battles Back

The Lions opened the scoring with a 39-yard field goal from Whyte.

Toronto responded through kicker Lirim Hajrullahu, who connected from 18 yards to tie the game at 3–3.

Whyte continued to find the range, adding field goals from 26 and 32 yards as BC built a 9–3 advantage.

The Argonauts answered with a seven-play, 70-yard drive.

Arbuckle connected with Makai Polk for a five-yard touchdown reception, giving Toronto a 10–9 lead.

However, the Lions regained the advantage just before halftime.

Whyte converted from 12 yards after Nathan Rourke scrambled deep into Toronto territory, sending BC into the break with a 12–10 lead.

BC extended its lead in the third quarter when Whyte converted a 40-yard field goal to make it 15–10.

Another Toronto turnover proved costly when Deontai Williams returned an interception 17 yards, setting up Whyte’s 19-yard kick.

The Lions continued to capitalize on scoring opportunities, and Whyte added a 29-yard field goal after Toronto’s Shawn Lemon recorded a sack on Rourke.

Toronto refused to go quietly. Arbuckle connected with David Ungerer for a 36-yard touchdown, bringing the Argonauts within four points at 21–17.

But Whyte delivered again, extending BC’s lead to 24–17 with another field goal. His remarkable performance ultimately proved decisive.

Final Minutes: Toronto Falls Short

The Argonauts had two opportunities to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

First, BC defensive back T.J. Lee intercepted Arbuckle at the Lions’ 11-yard line with 2:38 remaining, halting a promising Toronto drive.

The Argonauts received another opportunity in the closing seconds, reaching the one-yard line with a chance to force overtime.

However, the Lions’ defence stopped Arbuckle twice near the goal line, including a decisive stand with just 11 seconds remaining.

BC secured the victory by denying Toronto the tying touchdown

Key Player Performances

Sean Whyte — BC Lions

Eight field goals, including a crucial late 29-yard kick.

Whyte broke the Lions’ franchise record for field goals in a game and scored all 24 of BC’s points.

Nick Arbuckle — Toronto Argonauts

Completed 27 of 33 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns, but threw two interceptions.

His late-game drives nearly brought Toronto back

Nathan Rourke — BC Lions

Completed 15 of 32 passes for 254 yards.

Although the passing numbers were modest, he helped BC sustain drives and generate field-goal opportunities.

Makai Polk — Toronto Argonauts

Caught Toronto’s first touchdown, briefly putting the Argonauts ahead in the second quarter

The defeat dropped Toronto to 9–7, snapping its four-game winning streak and ending its five-game unbeaten run at BMO Field.

The Argonauts had already secured a playoff berth and the right to host a playoff game, so their postseason position remained a major positive despite Saturday’s setback. BC improved to 9–6, strengthening its hold on second place in the West Division.

Final Verdict

The Argonauts showed resilience and moved the ball effectively through the air, but costly turnovers and their inability to finish in the red zone proved decisive.

Arbuckle delivered a productive performance in place of the injured Chad Kelly, yet Toronto could not convert its final opportunities into points.

For BC, Whyte’s record-setting accuracy and a defence that stood firm under pressure secured a valuable road victory.
