USA: One More Step Toward History

The United States enter the final with enormous momentum. Their victory over Spain extended their World Cup winning streak to 35 games, dating back to 2006.

Breanna Stewart led the semifinal victory with 16 points, while Kahleah Copper scored 13 and Jackie Young added 12. The U.S. defense was particularly impressive in the fourth quarter, when Spain managed only eight points.

The Americans will be seeking their 12th World Cup gold medal

France: Historic Opportunity

France enters its first-ever FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup final after a convincing 86–64 semifinal victory over Germany.

Gabby Williams has been one of the tournament’s standout players and delivered 22 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals against Germany.

France also has Marine Johannes and Dominique Malonga providing major offensive and rebounding threats. FIBA’s tournament statistics have Williams leading France in scoring and efficiency.

Key Matchup

USA defense vs. Gabby Williams

If France can consistently create opportunities for Williams and force the American defense to rotate, the French have the talent to make this a championship thriller. The U.S., meanwhile, will look to use its depth, athleticism and defensive pressure to control the tempo.

Prediction

USA 78, France 70

France has reached uncharted territory and has the talent to challenge the reigning champions, but the Americans’ experience in championship games and defensive ability make them the slight favorite.
