Blue Jays’ bats struggle in shutout loss to the Twins

Although the Toronto Blue Jays were able to muster seven hits, they weren’t able to string any runs in a 2-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins. A rematch of game one of the 2023 American League Wild Card Series, the Twins took the game the second time around as well.

Kevin Gausman (12-9, 4.10) toed the rubber for the Blue Jays as Pablo Lopez (12-8, 4.26) for the Twins. Gausman threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs over four hits, walking four and punching out four, taking his 10th loss of the year. Lopez was dominant, allowing no runs on six hits, walking none and striking out three to earn his 13th win of the year.

The Twins got the only two runs of the game in the bottom of the 5th inning, as neither side could push any more runs across before and after the 5th. An RBI single from Carlos Santana gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead. A sacrifice fly from Willi Castro extended the Twins’ lead to 2-0.

This series is important to both squads, as the Blue Jays will try to climb back up towards .500 and eventually to the final AL Wild Card spot, which the Twins currently hold and are fighting to keep.

Jose Berrios (13-9, 3.72) will take the ball for the Blue Jays while rookie Zebby Matthews (1-1, 3.00) will do so for the Twins as the Blue Jays try to even up the series with a win on Saturday night.
