The Toronto Blue Jays endured a difficult finish to their three-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday night, suffering a decisive 13-2 defeat.
Kansas City struck quickly and never looked back, building an early lead before breaking the game open with a six-run sixth inning. Jac Caglianone led the Royals’ offensive attack with a career-best five hits and six RBIs, including a two-run home run in the ninth inning. Vinnie Pasquantino also homered and drove in three runs, while Carter Jensen added a solo home run.
Blue Jays starter Spencer Arrighetti lasted four innings, allowing four runs, three earned. The Toronto bullpen then struggled to contain the Royals, with Kansas City scoring six runs in the sixth to turn the contest into a rout.
Toronto’s biggest offensive highlight came in the bottom of the sixth when George Springer launched a two-run home run, his 13th of the season, ending Noah Cameron’s 19-inning scoreless streak. However, that was all the offence the Blue Jays could generate.
Cameron earned the victory after pitching six innings and allowing two runs. Toronto finished with eight hits but was unable to produce enough timely offence to challenge the Royals.
Michael Lorenzen also made his Blue Jays debut, pitching two innings and allowing one run.
The loss gave Toronto a disappointing end to the series and sent the Blue Jays into their next matchup looking to regroup after one of their most lopsided defeats of the season.
Caglianone finished with two-run singles in the first and sixth innings before adding his second home run in the ninth, completing a dominant individual performance.
