Schneider homers again as Blue Jays complete sweep of the Cardinals

Davis Schneider hit his second homer in two games as the Toronto Blue Jays swept the St. Louis Cardinals, completing a sweep for the first time since they did so to the Los Angeles Angels (August 22-25).

Yariel Rodriguez (1-6, 4.42) took the mound for the Blue Jays as Miles Mikolas (8-11, 5.55) did so for the Cardinals. Rodriguez lasted 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run over three hits, walking one and punching out two. Mikolas tossed 5 innings, allowing two runs across three hits, walking none and striking out four. Both pitchers left the game with no decisions.

The scoring didn’t start until the top of the 5th when Jordan Walker drove in a run with an RBI double to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the inning, Davis Schneider launched a two-run homer to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead. Excluding the homer he hit on Saturday, it was the first that Schneider hit since June 22 against the Cleveland Guardians.

The Cardinals tied it in the top of the 7th when Lars Nootbaar led off the inning with a solo homer to make it two runs apiece.

Later, in the bottom of the 8th, Nathan Lukes drove in George Springer with an RBI double to give the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead.

Chad Green (4-6, 3.49) came in for the 9th inning and bounced back from recent bad outings to shut down the Cardinals and earn his 17th save in 20 tries this year, helping lock down a sweep for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays will have an off day on Monday and head to Arlington as they prepare to take on the Texas Rangers for a three-game series.

Chris Bassitt (10-13, 4.20) will toe the rubber for the Blue Jays as Nathan Eovaldi (11-6, 3.67) will take the ball for the Rangers as both teams will play on Tuesday night.
