In recent years, the Toronto Maple Leafs have successfully drafted hidden gems like Joseph Woll, Matthew Knies, and Fraser Minten. However, at the 2023 NHL entry draft, they sprung a surprise by selecting Easton Cowen 28th overall, a move that raised eyebrows. Cowan, who was projected to be selected later in the draft, had caught the eye of Maple Leafs’ management and scouting staff with his unique style of play, which has been elevated to another level this season.
Easton Cowan has not just dominated but redefined the OHL this season. The 18-year-old finished the season with a staggering 34 goals and 52 assists for 96 points. Moreover, Cowan had a 36-game point streak in the regular season, setting a London Knights record and marking the longest point streak in the OHL since 1995.
Cowan was named the OHL’s most outstanding player and voted on by the league’s writers and broadcasters. In 15 games played in the OHL Playoffs, Cowan has eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points. Cowan made his presence known in game one of the OHL finals last night against the Oshawa Generals, collecting five points with one goal and four assists in an 8-1 victory.
With his impressive performance, Maple Leafs fans eagerly anticipate Cowan’s transition into the NHL next season, should he make the team. Some fans have already pencilled him in as the second-line left winger. The excitement is there for this outstanding player as we look forward to Cowan turning heads at training camp in September and giving him a fair shot at making the Maple Leafs roster for opening night.
